Voices of the Tide: Stories of Connection with the Ocean

To celebrate Ocean Month, in June, the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) is exploring the stories of our connections with the ocean. It starts with an invitation to all to share their own stories of connection with the sea.

Submissions for the Voices of the Tide project are now closed. Find the results of this Ocean Month project, and others, on the Ocean Month web page.

“To me, the ocean is always where I took my kids to find peace and awe.”

Throughout Delaware’s history, the ocean has influenced our culture and way of life creating a rich maritime heritage that has shaped our communities and economy. What is your connection with the ocean? Is there a special person, place or perhaps a moment in time that brings back memories and reconnects you to the salty water and the sea air?

Please share your ocean connection. Tell us about how you fell in love with the ocean or how you rely on it. You may also submit one new or old personal photo associated with your story.

All submissions will be gathered into a story catalog for public viewing and will be entered into a raffle to receive a DNREC prize pack. Selected entries will be featured throughout June on DNREC media and may also be featured in Outdoor Delaware.

While this project is a celebration of Delaware’s history with the ocean, the stories will also help DNREC planners identify marine resources and activities to address in Delaware’s Ocean and Bay Plan.

Ocean lovers all have an ocean story. Whether it’s a childhood fascination with the creatures beneath the surface, the allure of unearthing buried treasure alongside a person important to you or your livelihood shaped by the sea, all stories matter.

Ocean stories will be accepted from April 23, through May 15, 2025 at 4:30 pm.
